Iceland, the experience is the destination.
Iceland’s current tourism slogan does a very good job of summing up my feelings of my most recent adventure. The destination was the experience there is really nothing more to say.
Â
It started with my flight landing in Keflavic airport around 4:30 in the afternoon during an early winter evening. From the windows in the plane I could see I was landing on an island that had a landscape I had never seen in real life. Yes, part of it seemed lunar, like the cliché goes but other parts were simply otherworldly. I did check out some pictures before my trip but on this occasion photos don’t do it entirely justice.
Â
I picked up my luggage and finished the paperwork for my rented Suzuki 4×4 and was out into the cold Icelandic night by 5:00 p.m. The snowy landscape had disappeared into a dark artic night. It was 1° Celsius and my next stop was Reykjavik. My advance planning did not distinguish between Keflavic and the capital. I rode around the small village for fifteen minutes before I realized the country’s largest city must be bigger than a few roads running east and west. I made my way back to the main highway and followed the signs to my first destination.
