Beach Shacks in New Smyrna

I rode a bike yesterday.  I rode a bike on the beach.  I thought, when I first thought about riding a bike along the beach, that I would take a pleasant ride along the white sand beach in New Smyrna.  It’s been years since I’ve been to my childhood beach and a few things have changed.

The sand is softer because cars are no longer allowed on the beach.  The softer sand is nicer to the foot but harder on a cycler.  My pleasant ride turned into a very hard slog for much of the beach.

Another thing I noticed was that the hurricanes from the past few years have definitely left their mark.   It seems that where the buildings on the beach were the highest the damage to the beach was the worst and where there were no buildings the beach erosion was less.  I could be wrong but it sure looked that way.

Down at the inlet the local authorities have built a boardwalk that stretches the length and width a natural sand dune reserve.  Definitely worth the walk.

One thing that hasn’t changed though are the beautifully colored beach shacks.  On my ride back I snapped a few shots of the shacks that haven’t changed.

Check out the ones I’m taking back with me.
